A competitor in Saturday’s USA Track & Field National Club Cross Country Championships was tragically struck and killed by a fire engine late Saturday in Lexington, Ken., and has been identified as Lauren Woodall Roady. Hours earlier she had competed in the national championships as part of the Georgetown Running Company.

The 27-year-old Roady was struck just after 10 p.m. Saturday on Broadway Avenue in Lexington, LEX18.com reported. Police have yet to clarify exactly how the accident occurred and the intersection was blocked off until around 3 a.m. to reconstruct the scene.

“We are truly saddened to hear of this tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to Lauren’s family, friends and teammates,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “The running community is very tight-knit, and our condolences go out to everyone affected by her loss.”

Earlier in the day Roady had finished 149th in the 6 km women’s open race at the Club Cross Country Championships. The Georgetown Running Company placed 11th overall out of 24 teams in the team competition.
